ENS Means Significant Nasal Problems

Lastly, when packing, don’t overload the car. Excess weight makes the engine work harder, using up more petrol. Try not to put too much baggage if any on the roof as it’ll create aerodynamic drag and have a negative effect on mileage.

On the Open Road

When you head out for an extended weekend or vacation, try not to exceed the speed limit on the way there and back. Speeding offers poor fuel economy. Let alone costly fines.

Also, avoid dramatic accelerated starts and excessive idling as they both use up fuel.

If your car overheats, don’t open the radiator cap until the car has cooled down; hot fluid could spill out and cause serious skin burns.

Check your tire pressure before and also during your trip. Keeping them properly inflated saves on fuel.

If you are not familiar with the roads to your destination, take the extra time to study a map. And carry the same map with you on your journey.

Build Your Body Like Rome

Apparently, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Yet, people want to lose multiple dress sizes or pant sizes by next weekend by drinking some unknown “juice” that promises quick weight loss (yeah right), or by eating a ton of greasy meat all day (I bet that works all the time…….not), or by popping pills with God only knows what ingredients they have in them (as my grandmother says, “Good luck to you”).

Why?

Why would a logical, smart, good-natured person like you actually think that the list above (and hundreds of other crazy weight loss fads) will actually work? There is no reason to be that desperate. Let me tell you that there is a 99.92308234% chance that as soon as you lose that weight with a “fad” diet, you will gain it back……..and then some.

Do it the right way.

“What is the right way?” you may be asking.

Diet and exercise…….a fitness program……commitment………empowering yourself to make small lifestyle changes that snowball into a new you.

How?

I thought you would never ask. Let me give you 2 EASY, BASIC things for you to do (and these things also go for you intermediate and advanced fitness people, too):

1.Get moving everyday - It always get a good laugh when someone make a “New Year’s Resolution” to get fit. Or claim that they’re going to go to the gym everyday (when they haven’t seen the inside of a gym in months or years). How long does it last? 1 day, 2 days, maybe a week? Why do you think that has happened to you or others? Because that person was not COMMITTED to get moving everyday (or almost everyday). Do you know of a person like this………maybe yourself??? :)

“So you’re saying that you were LAUGHING at me Chris”………

Onward.

What are easy ways to get moving?

-Taking a brisk 15 minute walk once or twice daily (outdoors preferably, but not a necessity)

-Pushups - a great overall strength trainer (unfortunately, many people can hardly do any of these, much less do them with proper form). Even if you can only do 1 pushup, try to do 2 tomorrow and 5 by next week. Let it build.

-Crunches - very basic abdominal exercise, but it will get you started. For you advanced performers out there, see how many you can do in 30 seconds or a minute or 2 minutes…..ALWAYS remember proper form, or else 1,546,127 crunches in a day don’t mean squat.

2.Start an exercise program - In order to lose weight and keep the weight off, you have to make a change to start an exercise program (and keep to it!). My advice, don’t go for the jugular so quickly, sit down and draw up a plan on how you can fit it in your everyday life (EVERYBODY can fit in some sort of exercise program, so I don’t want to hear any whining on how YOU don’t have the time). How about this for a quick exercise program (just off the top my head, especially for you, I don’t have the time!!! people out there, lol):

Upon waking in the morning:

-Go for a brisk 10-15 minute walk outside (if possible), remembering to keep the arms pumping and concentrate on taking good, deep breaths. Upon returning home, slowly walk around for 1 minute to cool down (only if necessary), drop and do 10 pushups with arms shoulder width apart, rest for 30 seconds, then do 10 pushups with arms as close as possible together, rest for 1 minute, then finish with 10 pushups with arms far apart (practically speaking). Finish up your “routine” by jumping rope for 2-3 minutes (or longer shorter depending on your fitness level at that moment).

This is just a SAMPLE, and if you start saying “Chris, I can’t do 10 pushups three times in a row”……….then do 5, or 3, or heck…..even 1. Just get started, you will be amazed how much stronger you will get in the coming days, weeks, months, years. This will build your strength, endurance, coordination, and health all in that 1 tiny workout.

Change your way of thinking…….start slow and build up. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and your body won’t be built like Rome in a day either………but YOU can lay the foundation for your own temple that is your body. Don’t wait until your temple starts crumbling and heaven forbid starts to collapse. It may be beyond repair. Rebuild your body, your muscles, your arms, your legs, your organs…………..start now, start small, and make it fun.

Treat your body with respect and it will repay you tenfold. You will begin to understand once you make that change. You will feel alive, energized, and ready to face a new day, everyday.

Make a commitment to “add more bricks” to your temple, make yourself stronger, more flexible, ready to handle any problems that you may encounter. Don’t rely on other people to tell you that your body doesn’t look like Rome. People are too politically correct. I will probably tell you, though :) . You can make yourself look like your own personal “Rome.” You just have to get started………..challenge yourself, and lay that foundation.

There are so many ways to get fit, I could write for days……………but I need to stop so YOU can get started on your fitness program.

If you are still hell-bent on trying that new “fad” diet, or drinking that nasty looking liquid that promises quick weight loss in 3 days (I don’t even want to know how)……..I’ll be waiting with open arms when that fails (and it will fail at some point), lol. So, just forget that trash, get started right, and build your body that is something to be proud of. Get started now, and I’ll talk to you soon.

Another study found no significant differences in dynamic leg strength and leg power between a group who only performed maximum vertical jumps (from ground level), and two groups who performed depth jumps from varying heights(5).

And it gets even better, because a couple of other studies concluded that plyometrics have no effect on power development performance (6,7). Yet another study found no significant differences in the vertical jump, the leg press and peak power of the quads between a group who performed a strength training program and a group who performed a strength training program and plyometrics(8).

But plyometrics might be good for one thing and that is causing sport injuries!

Cook and his coworkers noted the risk of injury associated with plyometrics (9).

Hutchins states that the use of plyometrics exercises is “irresponsible” (10). The most common plyometrics related injuries are patellar tendonitis (11,12) and stress fractures (11). Many others have questioned the safety of plyometrics.

Having said that, you can see why, plyometrics are not the best way to increase vertical height! There is absolutely no scientific basis to it- the scientific evidence proves it to bee harmful and not beneficial.

At best you can be injured if you do not have the necessary strength base! Having said that, it is imperative to develop a foundation of strength with strength weight training program before using plyometrics!

Plyometrics should be performed only if your body is strong enough to handle it.

Here are a few studies that prove that a plyometrics training system in combination with a strength training program can give you good results

In an issue of the Penn State Sports Medicine Newsletter there are numerous studies that prove this point!

One was of Finnish volleyball players (whose jump skills were already very good) who added plyometrics to their normal weight training. They saw an increase in vertical leap of 11%. There was also a description of a study done at the Human Performance Lab at Oregon State that compared plyometrics (jumps onto a box, double leg hops and split squat jumps) and squatting twice per week to one or the other. The squat only group increase vertical leap 3.30 centimeters. Plyometrics only showed a 3.81 cm increase and the combination training increased 10.67 cm which is a big difference.

My issue with plyometrics is that it has not been studied enough for the average person to take up this kind of workout. The height that people jump from has to be exact, the technique at which the land has to be as near perfect as possible, the coach has to really know what they are doing. If you are doing it from a book, then stay well away from plyometrics. If you have a qualified coach who has done this kind training and really knows there stuff, then go for it.

Your Health Never Takes A Vacation

Ahh, summertime is here, and it is time for a vacation. It’s time for you and your family, (or just you yourself), to get out there, explore someplace new, visit family and friends, or just go to the beach. So, of course, you pack your necessary clothes, toothbrush, comb, hair dryer, etc., you have everything, right?

How about your weight loss exercise program?

What about your local gym that you go to?

Or the fitness devices you have at home?

Can you use your vacation as a fitness vacation, also?

Did you pack your discipline, too? Because you’ll need it when you go to all of those restaurants you’ll be going to.

Well, if you forgot to pack those (which most people do when they go on vacation), don’t worry, I am here to help you with all of those questions while you are on vacation.

While vacation is for having fun, you should NEVER lose sight of the big picture. And that is to lose weight, stay in shape, changing your lifestyle, etc.

I can hear the excuse train coming already…

“It’s too hard to work out while I’m on vacation.”

“How will I ever eat right when we go out to eat at restaurants the whole time?”

“Where will I work out at?”

Etc. etc. etc.

Always an excuse, right?

First of all, yes, it will probably be more difficult to stay on your fitness regimen while you are on vacation.

I’ll give you that.

But that’s all I will give you.

You can and MUST get it done…many people do it, including myself…so, it can be done.

Inconvenient?…maybe.
Impossible?…Not even close.

There are people in this world who do the most amazing things to survive day in and day out…so before you start complaining that thinking ahead and planning how you will stay fit on your vacation is sooooo hard…just realize that people are always doing bigger and better things.

Now that that’s out of the way…let’s get into the “how” you will manage to stay fit on vacation.

Let me show you how, it’s really not that hard.

Ok, sample scenario…

You and your family are driving to the beach, staying at a nearby hotel for a few days.

Sounds like a basic family vacation, right?

Let’s see what you can do…

1. Stop by a grocery store (there are some by the beach too, you know) and stock up on fruits, vegetables, other assorted healthy snacks (low-fat yogurt, granola, raisins, etc.) to keep in your hotel room as snacks.

2. Also, you can buy bottled water, healthy juices (NOT the ones loaded with added sugar), teas, etc.

3. Most hotels have a small refrigerator (or…just go to the local Walgreen’s and buy a styrofoam cooler to put all of your stuff in). You just have to get ice from your hotel (and change it every day or so).

4. When you do go to restaurants (and there are usually a TON of them wherever you go on vacation)…pick a restaurant that offers a lot of lean meats, fruits, and vegetables.

5. If you need to, eat just enough to tide you over for when you get back to your hotel room…then you can eat from your healthy snacks.

6. Share a healthy chicken, turkey, or fish dish with a member of your family.

7. Stay FAR AWAY from onion rings, french fries, mozzarella sticks, etc.

8. Most hotels have a gym…use it…they also have carpeted floors…use them for doing pushups and other body-weight exercises (more to come on that in the future).

9. Take a brisk walk on the beach in the morning and night…there’s nothing much better than watching a sunrise and sunset while you are exercising.

10. Or, just do this little routine………brisk walk for 2 minutes, do 10 pushups, then 15 jumping jacks, then sprint for 15 seconds….rest for 2 minutes and repeat.

There you go…….I just gave you 10 things you can do to stay fit while on vacation…what other things can you do?

Nothing short of hundreds…maybe thousands.

But it’s about that time.
